IN LOVING MEMORY OF JOANN BEHAGG

Recently, the YWCA was saddened to learn of the passing of Joann Behagg, who first came to the organization in 2013 at the invitation of Mrs. Janet Jennings. In April of that year, the YWCA’s Art Program was launched with a six‑week course in ceramics, taught by Joann. The young participants—enthusiastic and eager to learn—embraced the opportunity to develop a new artistic skill under her guidance. In a second program, Joann expanded their creative horizons by introducing them to the art of batik and tie‑dye.

We are grateful for the many Saturdays she devoted to enriching the lives of our youth and engaging them in joyful, imaginative pursuits. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

Obituary
December 5, 1951 – July 1, 2026

Joann G. Behagg was born in Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera, to Everette and Alice Griffin. A gifted artist and devoted teacher, she studied ceramics in Surrey, England, before returning home to inspire generations of Bahamian students at Government High School, L.W. Young Junior High School, and The College of The Bahamas.

Her belief in the healing power of art guided her work as an art therapist and fueled her founding of the Bahamas chapter of Empty Bowls, uniting artists and community members in the fight against hunger. Joann exhibited her ceramics locally and internationally, represented The Bahamas at CARIFESTA, and continued to create and mentor through her studio, JB Pottery.

Above all, Joann was a loving mother whose warmth, generosity, and creativity enriched every life she touched. Her legacy lives on in the beauty she created and the many people she inspired.
