New Program - Beyond the Mission: YWCA Operations

Behind the Mission:  YWCA OPERATIONS is a new program directed by Trustee and Management Boards. It provides individuals with a year-long opportunity to develop practical skills in leadership and community service. An integral aspect of the program will be the integration and implementation of the World YWCA’s Standards of Good Management and Accountability, ensuring that participants gain not only hands-on experience but that they also acquire a deep understanding of ethical and effective organizational practices.

Participants will gain an overview of multiple areas of nonprofit operations, including:

  • Governance & Leadership – participation in board and committee meetings

  • Law & Finance – understanding compliance and financial management

  • Communications & Public Speaking – building confidence through outreach and social media platforms

  • Program Development – assisting in the design and delivery of impactful community initiatives

  • Technology – learning tools that support modern nonprofit operations

  • Affordable Housing – engaging with community housing project issues

  • Global Engagement – participation in the World YWCA Council in 2027 (tentative)

Natalea Bain, a newer member of the YWCA and a participant in the upcoming program, shared her excitement about joining:

“I graduated from the University of The Bahamas in May 2025 with a strong interest in leadership, business development, and making a positive impact in the community. I’m eager to learn from accomplished women and build meaningful connections.”

Additional participants in the program include Daphne Woods McIntosh (pictured at the far left), a retired banker and proud mother of two daughters, as well as a grandmother to four wonderful grandchildren. Mrs. McIntosh holds a Bachelor of Science in Professional Management with a minor in Finance from Nova Southeastern University.

Theresa Bastian is the sixth and youngest child of Mervyn and Fearless Hepburn. She fondly recalls attending YWCA events with her mother and is related to cousins Mildred Bowe and Verna Elcock.

While browsing the YWCA archives, she came across photographs of her mother’s friends, who were also members of the association: Mavis Chea, Patricia Archer, and Clarice Granger. She has been happily married to her husband of thirty-eight years, Terrance Bastian, and is proud to be the mother of two daughters, Theodosia and Tiffany. Despite doctors telling her she likely wouldn’t have children, her first daughter was born in Italy nine years after her marriage—a moment she describes as a "true miracle". Recently retired as a Senior Guidance Counselor, she remains active at Abundant Grace Church, where she leads the Children’s Ministry. Grateful to God for her life, she cherishes the journey and gives thanks for it all.

Cheryl Seymour, the second child of veteran educators and a mother of two, has been part of the public service since 1993, working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology and certification in the specialty of Cytology. A member of the Lutheran Church, she also often supports activities of other denominations.
